The fact that the days are shorter and the temperatures are lower doesn't mean that Gauteng is not still full of fun things to do. Taking advantage of all the outdoor activities the province has to offer may be reserved for the summer months, but our province also offers loads of ways to have fun while staying warm. The CSi Property Group looks at some of the ways you can keep yourself and your family entertained this winter.
What is there to do in Gauteng this winter?
Over and above the art galleries, museums and cultural attractions of Johannesburg that you can enjoy when the mercury drops during winter, there are numerous events coming up to keep you well entertained through the colder months.
For starters, the Cellar Rats Winter Wine Fest is coming to Riversands Farm Village in Fourways on 3 July. This event promises to offer an array of wines, bubbles and craft gins as well as deli products to tantalise your taste buds. The Pick n Pay Wine & Food Festival Waterfall Park, which is coming to the Mall of Africa from 2 July, is another event that shouldn't be missed by food and wine enthusiasts.
Comedy is coming to the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg on 29 July. The show is called Goliath and Goliath and the lineup features some of South Africa's best-loved comedians, including Carvin Goldstone, Mpho Popps, Joey Rasdien and others. This show features a total of 30 comedians, with each comedian performing a five-minute set. Tickets are available at Webtickets. If laughter is your best medicine this winter, another show not to miss is the Mpho Popps Birthday Special with Friends, which is happening at Emperor's Palace on 24 June.
If you're looking to warm up your winter with a night of smooth jazz and Afropop, the season's most not-to-be-missed event is Judith Sephuma and Jimmy Dludlu - a Legendary Night, which is taking place at Emperor's Palace on 18 June.
Family outings in Gauteng this winter
Gauteng offers many great opportunities for winter fun for the whole family, and topping the list in 2022 is The Jungle Book Kids which is coming to the Peoples Theatre at Joburg Theatre from 14 June. Kids (as well as adults who are young at heart) will love getting to know Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo and the rest of the characters from this famous story.
There are many things that families love about Gauteng and one of them is the range of great museums on offer. This winter, you can help your kids get to know the history of our country in a meaningful, interactive way. You can while away a wintery day at the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial or the Apartheid Museum. Bring your kids' history lessons to life with a visit to one of the Ditsong Museums which include, amongst others, the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Cultural History.
If science is more your family's thing, you can head to Sci-Bono, which boasts over 350 science and technology exhibits that will get everyone curious about the world that we live in.
There are also plenty of options when the kids need to get rid of some energy. You can ramp up the winter wonderland experience at Gauteng's ice rinks, which include Northgate Ice Rink, Grove Ice Rink, Festival Mall Ice Rink and Forest Hill Ice Rink. If your kids are at least eight years old, your family can get an adrenaline rush at Xtreme Indoor Karting in Fourways and petrol heads can get their fix at the James Hall Museum of Transport.
